Monreale, Duomo: “L’imperatore Gugliemo II d’Altavilla offre la cattedrale alla Vergine”. Questo mosaico, collocato nell’arcone del transetto, ha come protagonista Re Guglielmo II D’Altavilla, noto come “Guglielmo il Buono,” che nacque nel dicembre del 1153 da Guglielmo I “il Malo”, re di Sicilia figlio di re Ruggero II, e da Margherita di Navarra. Nel 1166, quando l’anziano padre morì, Guglielmo divenne re a soli dodici anni sotto la reggenza della madre. A Palermo il 13 febbraio 1177 Guglielmo sposò Giovanna Plantageneto (1165-1199), sorella di Riccardo Cuor di Leone. Ritenuto da molti giusto e tollerante, Guglielmo II protesse gli intellettuali del tempo, soprattutto i poeti arabi. Con Guglielmo i musulmani ebbero una larga rappresentanza di governo e di religione. Il Duomo di Monreale, dedicato alla Vergine Maria, fu realizzato per mostrare al mondo che Guglielmo era ormai un re maturo. Questo mosaico del XII secolo di stile arabo – normanno è tra i più antichi e integri della cattedrale.
Monreale, Duomo: “Emperor William II of Altavilla offers the Cathedral to the Virgin”. This mosaic, placed in the arch of the transept, has as its protagonist King William II of Altavilla, known as “William the Good,” who was born in December 1153. Hi father was William I “the Wicked”, king of Sicily, son of King Roger II , and his mother was Margaret of Navarre. In 1166, when his elderly father died, William became king at the age of twelve under his mother’s regency. On February 13, 1177 Guglielmo married Giovanna Plantageneto (1165-1199), sister of Richard the Lionheart, in Palermo. Believed by many to be just and tolerant, William II protected the intellectuals of the time, especially the Arab poets. Muslims had a large representation of government and religion during his kingdom. The Cathedral of Monreale, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built to show the world that William was now a mature king. This 12th century mosaic in Arab – Norman style is among the oldest and most intact of the cathedral.
