Mantua, Ducal Palace, The Pisanello Hall:
"The Banquet"

"The Banquet", by Pisanello (North-East Wall, Right Side). A sumptuous banquet, set up under a large pavilion, is depicted to the left of the tournament. The banquet is given at the end of the tournament to celebrate the winner. Bohort, Lancillot's cousin, refuses the king Brangoire's daughter, who would have been his as he has won the tournament. He has vowed chastity to dedicate himself to the search for the Holy Grail. The princess, in order to unite with Bohort, however, will persuade her nurse to enchant the hero with a spell as she wants to spend a night with him. A son will be born, Hélain le Blanc, from their union and he will be destined to become emperor of Constantinople. On the right there is a group of knights. The one who looks towards the observer, and wears a large headdress, should be the same Bohort, winner of the tournament. Pisanello, perhaps, decided to portray him with the features of the patron, Gianfrancesco Gonzaga. The sinopias reveal a ladies' stage and a castle strikingly reminiscent of Mantua's San Giorgio, along with the Gonzaga impresa featuring a mastiff with its muzzle turned back amidst entwined branches.
