Nonantola Abbey:
The Lunette of the Portal

Nonantola Abbey, the façade: the lunette of the portal. It was realised in the XII century and is attributed to the school of Wiligelmo. Christ is depicted enthroned and surrounded by angels.  The symbols of the four Evangelists are also represented. In the epistyle (which shows an evident crack in the centre) a Latin inscription can be read: “The high vaults of the temple collapsed in the one thousand hundred and seventeenth year from the birth of the Redeemer and four years later they began to be rebuilt”. An obvious reference to the violent earthquake that shook the Po Valley in 1117.
