Nonantola Abbey, the façade: the prothyrum. It is supported by two marble columns resting on column-bearing lions. It  frames the splendid portal with bas-relief carved panels attributed to the school of Wiligelmo, the most important master of Romanesque sculpture in Italy. Wiligelmo was probably a native of the diocese of Come and he sculpted the reliefs of the Cathedral of Modena in 1099 and was probably also the architect responsible for the construction of the façade and the front of the Modena cathedral.
