Modena, St. Charles College Foundation, St. Charles Church: “St. Charles gives the holy communion to the plague victims”, by Sigismondo Caula.
Born in Modena in 1637 and died in the same city in 1724, Caula, along with Francesco Stringa, was a key figure in the Este painting scene between the 17th and 18th centuries. Son of the nobleman Sebastiano Medici Caula, he was a pupil of Jean Boulanger and studied in Venice, influenced by the school of Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese. This 1670 painting presents, within a large architectural backdrop, poignant scenes of the plague and ecclesiastical charity. Above, angels and praying figures.
