Modena, St. Charles College:
"Supper at Emmaus" by Lucio Massari

Modena, Fondazione Collegio S. Carlo: “Supper at Emmaus”. This painting by Lucio Massari (born in Bologna in 1569 and died in his hometown in 1633) is influenced by Caravaggio and Carracci and dates back to the early 17th century. The “Supper at Emmaus,” a recurring iconographic theme in Christian art, depicts the Gospel episode in which the risen Jesus reveals himself to two disciples during a meal at Emmaus. According to the Gospel of Luke, after his death and resurrection, Jesus reveals himself to two disciples as they walk to Emmaus. The disciples, not recognizing him, invite him to dinner. During the meal, Jesus breaks the bread, and in that gesture the disciples are astonished to recognize him. This moment marks the revelation of his identity and the foundation of the sacrament of the Eucharist.
