Modena, Church of S. Charles:
"Assumption of the Virgin" by Francesco Stringa

Bottom
Modena, Fondazione Collegio S. Carlo, Church of S. Charles: "Assumption of the Virgin" by Francesco Stringa. Featuring the ethereal figure of the Madonna soaring above, it is one of the major works of this Baroque artist, born in Modena in 1635 and died in the same city in 1709. The influences of Mattia Preti, Guido Reni, and, above all, Annibale Carracci are evident, drawing inspiration from him for his compositional dynamics, the use of sharply accented light, and deep darkness. He worked at the Este court and created important fresco decorations in the Ducal Palace in Modena.
