Mantua, Ducal Palace:
"Camera Picta: the North-east Wall

This wall, like the next one, is quite bare. It is decorated with faux draperies. In the left section, there is a "gritty" decoration, that is, with a motif that develops vertically, with a sinuous trunk from which leaves, especially acanthus, rosettes and various types of flowers sprout, accompanied by pine cones, pomegranates and thistles. The central section is adorned with faux brocades with geometric motifs of oriental inspiration, with intertwining knots and geometric rosettes. On the right, a door and a built-in wardrobe open. Above the lintel of the door is a large, rather dilapidated Gonzaga coat of arms, held up by winged putti. The lunettes are almost illegible, except for the one on the right where the impresa of the white greyhound looking back with a loose leash can still be read. It is seated on a green lawn, on a red field – the heraldic colors of the Gonzaga family inspired by the theological virtues: Faith, Hope, Charity – and is the most emblematic image of the Fides Catholica and the loyalty in the service of the lord and first marquis of Mantua, Gianfrancesco Gonzaga.”
