Francesco Bianchi Ferrari was one of the leading figures of Emilian painting between the 15th and 16th centuries and was, in all likelihood, the first teacher of the young Correggio.
This altarpiece, painted in 1506, a few years before his death in Modena in 1510, is perhaps his most complete and mature work, displaying a softness and grace unknown in his youthful works. It depicts the Madonna and Child in glory between Saints Jerome and Sebastian. At her feet are three beautiful angels playing music. The predella depicts stories from the life of Saint Jerome; the cymatium depicts the Eternal Father giving a blessing.
