A 3D model of the pyxis with scenes from the life of Dionysus. This pyxis is preserved alongside a twin pyx with scenes from biblical episodes, and dates back to the 5th century AD. Pyxides were small cylindrical boxes made of various materials, including very precious ones such as ivory. They were realised to hold cosmetics, jewelry, toiletries, or medicines. Decorated in relief, this elephant tusk depicts the birth of Dionysus on one side, while the other depicts his enthronement with scenes from his childhood. In the first scene, his mother Semele is seated on a bed with her back resting against a piece of furniture decorated with a dolphin. Facing her, the nurse, followed by a handmaid, holds the infant Dionysus in her arms, who is holding out his hands to her. In the second scene, the young Dionysus is placed on a throne. Finally, the episodes conclude with a depiction of Dionysus riding a chariot drawn by two panthers.

Provenance: Palagi Collection.
Dating: V century a.C.
