La porta bronzea di Bonanno di Pisa del Duomo di Monreale

Monreale, Duomo: il portale della Cattedrale. La porta bronzea (1185-6), i cui pannelli vennero probabilmente realizzati a Pisa, è opera dell’artista toscano Bonanno Pisano. Infatti è firmata in basso Bonanno civis pisanus. Iconograficamente nei cinque ordini inferiori di formelle bronzee vi sono scene del Vecchio Testamento (sette dedicate alla storia di Adamo ed Eva, e altre sei ad altrettante coppie di profeti) mentre nelle formelle dei cinque ordini superiori sono rappresentate scene del Nuovo Testamento. Al sommo sono infine rappresentati Cristo e Maria nella gloria del Paradiso.

La porta fu realizzata, secondo la prassi bizantina e italo-bizantina, su una base lignea, con le singole formelle narrative o figurate fuse separatamente e fermate da una cornice metallica fissata al retrostante supporto di legno da chiodi le cui teste si presentano come rosette decorative.

Monreale, Duomo: the portal of the Cathedral. The bronze door (1185-6), whose panels were probably made in Pisa, was realised by the Tuscan artist Bonanno Pisano. In fact it is signed Bonanno civis pisanus at the bottom. In the five lower orders of bronze panels there are scenes from the Old Testament (seven dedicated to the story of Adam and Eve, and six to as many pairs of prophets) while, in the panels of the five upper orders, scenes from the New Testament are represented. Finally, at the top of the door, Christ and Mary are represented in the glory of Heaven.

The door was built, according to the Byzantine and Italo-Byzantine practice, on a wooden base, with the single narrative or figurative panels fused separately and framed by a metal structure fixed to the rear wooden support by nails whose heads appear as decorative rosettes.
