Mantua, Ducal Palace, Gallery of the Months:
the Central Southern Span

Bottom
Between the third and fourth span there is a wall sector which corresponds to the point of connection of the western half of the room onto the original Giulio Romano’s loggia. In the part above the stucco cornice there is an oval niche in gilded stucco, intended to house a stone bust and today hosting a recently placed female plaster bust. The area below is framed by a painted band, which repeats the vegetal interweaving motif present at the ends of the other spans, and features a high plinth in fake red marble. The inscription on a beige background in the central panel recalls the restoration of the gallery directed by Clinio Cottafavi (1930).
