Genoa, Cathedral of San Lorenzo:
The Wooden Choir

Bottom
Genoa, Cathedral of San Lorenzo (Duomo), apse: the wooden choir. This magnificent example of Ligurian cabinetmaking is a polyphonic creation crafted by various artists in the 16th century: Giovan Francesco Zambelli, Gian Michele de’ Pantaleoni, and Anselmo de’ Fornari. It also features additions from the third quarter of the 19th century by Vincenzo and Tommaso Garassino. The choir is decorated with scenes from the lives of Jesus, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Lawrence, Saint George, and Saint Sebastian, alternating with magnificent views and architecture of the city, geometric motifs, and musical instruments.
