Genoa, Cathedral of San Lorenzo:
the Northern Arm of the Transept

Genoa, Cathedral of San Lorenzo (Duomo): the northern arm of the transept. The northern arm of the transept takes its name from the large funerary monument of the Cybo family that occupies its lower part. It was made of marble in the 16th century and is one of the masterpieces of Giacomo and Guglielmo della Porta. Niccolò da Corte also collaborated on its construction. In the centre, above the Cybo monument, is the large pipe organ by Gaspare Forlani and assistants (1552-1555), whose doors were painted by Giulio Benso (1634-1636). To the sides of the organ: Innocent IV proclaiming the translation of the ashes and Frederick Barbarossa donating the silver casket for the ashes of John the Baptist to the cathedral of Genoa, frescoes by Ludovico Pogliaghi (1910). The fresco in the lunette, Arrival of the ashes of St. John the Baptist, is also by the same artist.
