“The Myth of Medea”

Bottom

The relief on the front  of this sarcophagus depicts the dramatic death of Creusa, who was Jason's young wife and Medea's rival. Medea, suffering because of Jason's rebuttal, gives Creusa a diadem and a dress which, when worn, would burn her flesh. In the scene, Creusa is dying, writhing in agony, under the distraught eye of her father Creon. The episode is preceded, on the left, by the scene of Creusa and Jason in their nuptial chamber and followed, to the right, by Medea plotting to kill her own two children, and her escape with their corpses on a cart pulled by snakes.
