Mantua, Hall of Troy:
“The Life of a Roman Military Commander”

The relief on the front of this sarcophagus represents, with a storytelling that proceeds from left to right, three moments in the life of a celebrated character depicted as belonging to high ranks of the Roman army. In the center appears a ritual sacrifice, alluding to the Pietas. On the left is the figure of Virtue in the form of headless winged Victoria, followed by the symbolic scene of Clementia towards the vanquished; on the right is depicted the marriage symbolized by the dextrarum iunctio (the ceremonial handshake between two spouses) alluded to by the personification of Concordia. Thus the allegory of the four Roman cardinal virtues, typical of imperial iconography, appear on the front.
