Mantua, Hall of Troy:
“A Battle between Greeks and Amazons ”

This relief of a front of sarcophagus depicts a clash between Greeks and Amazons (Amazonomachy). The latter were a people of warrior women led by a queen, easily recognizable thanks to her characteristic “chitonisco”, a short chiton (garment), which left her legs free, and her right breast uncovered. An Amazonomachy, or "Amazon Battle", was symbolic of the struggle between civilisation, or normality, and barbarism.
