Hall of Troy: “The Sack of Troy” (Iliou Persis)

Bottom
Twenty-six characters identified as the protagonists of the tragic story of the capture of Troy (Iliou persis) are arranged on the front in two neat rows. On the right Neoptolemus is seen in the act of killing the elderly Trojan king Priam; then there is a group of women attacked by the Achaeans, among whom is perhaps Andromache in the act of protecting her son Astyanax. Other scenes illustrate the assault on the city, its defenders and the terrified population while fleeing.
Sarcophagus, Proconnesian marble, 170-180 A.D.
