Jupiter and the fall of Ebe

The center of the vault constitutes the focus for reading the entire cycle of the room, but debated is the interpretation of the scene depicted here: Jupiter in the act of supporting Gea or Venus. As recently hypothesized, it could instead depict the fall of Ebe, abandoned in favor of Ganimede by Jupiter. This was one of the causes of the Trojan war and a reason for descent into the field of Juno in favor of the Achaeans. The goddess, sitting and accompanied by the award of the peacock, witnesses the scene, closed on the right by the Ganimede Coppiere and by the L'Aquila of Jupiter. Some secondary figures, including a probable fame on the eastern sail, occupy the space of heaven between the center and the base of the vault where battle episodes arose from that initial cause are placed. The privileged reference is book V of the Iliad, dedicated to the deeds of the Greek Diomede. The frescoes, on a project by Giulio Romano, were performed by the Students Fermo Ghisoni, Luca Scaletti (Il Figurino) and Rinaldo Mantovano.
