Modena, Fondazione Collegio S. Carlo, Church of S. Carlo: "Marriage of the Virgin" by Francesco Vellani.
Born in 1688 and died in 1768, Francesco Vellani was active in Modena during the Late Baroque period and devoted himself primarily to religious subjects. He was commissioned to execute the large altarpiece in the final years of his life, when, in his late eighties, he was still busy with major commissions: it is worth noting that, contemporaneous with this work, he also painted the large altarpiece of the "Assumption" for Modena Cathedral. The elderly painter, overworked, nevertheless committed himself to the work, as evidenced by the three surviving sketches. Francesco Vellani died before completing the work: Francesco Camuncoli, a painter from Novellara, was called upon to complete the painting. The altar was purchased and installed on December 3, 1779.
